As a person who has both friends and family effected by endometriosis I understand the frustration and discomfort that it causes.
I have seen how it affects those who are trying to conceive as well as the effects of endometrial pain on their daily lives. Many women go through this without much support or improvement in their condition. It is because of this that I wanted to share the top 5 ways endometriosis can be treated.
I have seen these different treatment methods not only provide relief from endometriosis but also lead to healthy natural pregnancies.
What Is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition which affects almost 1 in 10 women globally. It's a condition where a specific type of tissue is found outside of where it should be. Inside of the uterus your uterine lining grows and sheds endometrial tissue. This growth and shedding is normally occurring in women who have regular cycles. When this tissue is found outside of the uterus it becomes a problem called endometriosis. These cells still grow and shed a lining but because it's now outside of the uterus it causes many types of problems. As the lining sheds it causes inflammation, pain, cramps and other problems in the area it has attached.
This condition can be extremely difficult to diagnose without having surgery. There are not any blood tests nor ultra sounds which can definitively diagnose endometriosis. The only way to be completely confident with the diagnosis of endometriosis is with Laparoscopic surgery. The good news with this surgery is that if endometriosis is seen they also can remove the areas that they see and are being affected. The down side to this type of diagnosis and treatment is that they can only remove what they (may miss areas that are affected) as well as in many cases endometrial tissue can grow back in passing menstrual cycles.
The Western Medical system often treats endometriosis in two ways, surgery or drugs. Medications are often given which stop a woman's body from having regular cycles so the growing and shedding cycle stops which decreases or eliminates the symptoms. The problem with this is there may be side effects to these medications as well as you can no longer try to conceive as you are not ovulating. The second option is Laparoscopic surgery as I discussed above. This option is usually the one chosen for women trying to conceive.
There are other options available to you but are much less known. Though these options are less mainstream they are not necessarily less effective. Some studies have shown a natural approach can be more effective than some medications.
The Top 5 Natural Treatment Methods for Endometriosis.
1 - Diet
Food can play a big part in how endometriosis presents, grows and fades in women. In my practice diet is one key factor I often see make or break a successful treatment plan. The signs and symptoms of endometriosis are often aggravated by inflammatory foods. Switching to a diet which is anti inflammatory leads to less discomfort. Endometriosis is also associated and affected by estrogen levels. Foods that help the body decrease estrogen help limit the symptoms of endometriosis. Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and kale all help the body eliminate estrogen. To read more about diet suggestions for endometriosis read the Acubalance Fertility Diet
2 - Chinese Herbal Formulas
Chinese herbs prescribed from an experienced and licensed practitioner are a safe and effective way to treat endometriosis. There are many different herbal combinations used to treat endometriosis and they depend on several factors before being administered. When prescribed properly studies have shown Chinese herbs
to be more effective than some drug therapies in relieving pain and shrinking adnexal masses. Studies have even shown how combining Chinese Herbal Medicine with Laparoscopic surgery offers "Significant Efficacy
3 - Acupuncture Treatment
When acupuncture needles are placed at specific points they are able to stimulate the bodies own ability to heal and stop pain. Acupuncture releases endorphins, improves circulation and regulates the nervous system. When applied at specific times of your cycle it has a powerful effect improving endometrial discomfort. A big aspect of endometriosis is pain management. Most women notice pain around their period and ovulation but others can notice pelvic pain anytime in their cycles. Acupuncture offers relief
without side effects.
4 - Supplements
There are many great supplements which can help your body combat endometriosis. I try to get the bulk of my nutrients from my diet it's difficult to get a therapeutic dose of a key few. Vitamin B, C and E
help the body with oxidative stress and hormone metabolism which aid in decreasing endometriosis pain. There are many different vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which offer great results in the treatment.
5 - Stress Reduction
Stress is normal and occurs in everyone's daily life. Only when this stress is too high for too long will it begin to play a role in the severity of endometriosis. There has been a study looking at how endometriosis is exacerbated with stress
Starting de-stressing techniques in your daily life can offer great benefits if you are suffering from endometriosis. Deep breathing, guided imagery, exercise and journaling all can help decrease the stress found in daily life.
If you have been diagnosed with endometriosis and are looking for treatment options there are a variety to choose from. Surgery, Drugs, Acupuncture, Herbs and Diet all offer good results and can be used in combination with each other. If you are trying to conceive, these more natural approaches may be a better option than drugs and medication.
