NAC: A Crucial Supplement for PCOS and Endometriosis
What is NAC?
NAC, or N-acetyl cysteine, is an amino acid that acts as a precursor to glutathione, one of the body’s most important antioxidants. It restores your cell’s ability to fight damage from oxidative stress, improves cellular detox, and helps regulate the gene that produces pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
Studies show that NAC can improve levels of circulating insulin in your bloodstream, an important factor for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and insulin sensitivity. With PCOS, there is typically more inflammation and oxidative stress found in the body, and sufficient stores of glutathione can be crucial for help control inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. These factors will also subsequently reduce high levels of androgens which manifest as head hair loss, acne, and facial hair. Another studied compared NAC to metformin, with NAC outperforming metformin in improving lipid profiles and fasting blood sugar/insulin levels. With regards to fertility, researchers have found that NAC and clomid worked together better than clomid alone in regulating ovulation in women with PCOS as well as increases egg quality.
In a 2013 study of 92 Italian women with endometriomas (endometrial tissue forming a cyst on the ovary) were taking 600mg of NAC three times per day for three days out of the week. 24 patients were able to cancel their laparoscopy procedures due to a decrease in their pain levels, shrinkage of the endometriomas, or due to pregnancy. 55% of these patients reported a decrease in dysmenorrhea, 50% reported a decrease in dyspareunia, and 59% in chronic pelvic pain.
Since NAC is an antioxidant that protects the cells from oxidative damage, it is great for treating chronic illness associated with aging. It helps reduce the occurrence and severity of the symptoms of influenza, inhibits the growth of and treats H.pylori, reduces the severity of obsessive compulsive disorders, specifically trichotillomania. There is also significant research showing NAC helps block cancer development and induces cell death in multiple different kinds of cancer.
