Miscarriage: Causes and Treatment
Miscarriage and pregnancy loss is unfortunately an extremely common occurrence during one’s fertility journey. In fact, 20% of all confirmed pregnancies end in miscarriage, 80% of those occurring in the first 12 weeks. Everyone processes loss differently and requires different lengths of time and tools for healing. I find investigating the potential causes of miscarriage and exploring various treatment options really helpful when dealing with this type of loss.
CAUSES OF MISCARRIAGE: Sometimes understanding the why behind the loss can give some comfort and direction towards prevention. Genetic abnormalities inherited from either the egg or sperm (like aneuploidy or chromosomal translocations) count for 60-80% of miscarriages. Uterine abnormalities like fibroids or a septate uterus can interfere with the growth of the fetus. Blood clotting disorders like thrombophilia or infections such as bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, and salmonella can also lead to pregnancy loss. Thyroid disorders such as untreated hypothyroidism should be investigated (a TSH of 2.5mIU/L or higher should be closely monitored and medication should be considered). Low progesterone, blood sugar instability, and autoimmune diseases (such as antiphospholipid syndrome) can also be a leading factor in miscarriage.
WESTERN TREATMENT: Experiencing two or more miscarriages warrants for further testing and exploration. A referral to a Recurrent Pregnancy Loss clinic (experienced reproductive endocrinologist or immunologist) may be helpful as well. I’ll often suggest my patients get some basic testing from their GP or reproductive endocrinologist if they are experiencing recurrent miscarriages such as a thyroid panel, vitamin D, and ferritin. In most cases of recurrent pregnancy loss, a combination of western medicine and holistic treatment like naturopathy and/or traditional Chinese medicine gives the best results.
CHINESE MEDICINE TREATMENT: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks at the body very differently than Western medicine. Practitioners are trained to look for subtle clues of imbalances that may point to an issue with the larger picture of health and fertility. We use Chinese herbs, acupuncture, dietary changes, and lifestyle suggestions when helping to bring the body back into balance to boost fertility, balance hormones, and reduce chances of miscarriage. Acupuncture helps reduce the risk of miscarriage by increasing the blood flow to the ovaries and uterine lining (so they have all of the oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to create healthy cells), increasing blood flow to the testicles for healthier sperm, nourishing the developing fetus by improving blood flow to the placenta and preventing uterine contractions, improving hormone balance (like low progesterone), reducing inflammation in the pelvis, and activating the parasympathetic nervous system (the body’s relaxation response) to reduce stress.
