Can Fruits and Vegetables Damage Your Sperm?

We are always being told to eat our fruits and vegetables to help improve both male and female fertility but could fruits and veggies be bad for sperm?  A recent study has shown just that but it's not the veggies fault, it's the chemicals! Pesticides found on some of these are extremely detrimental to semen quality and quantity.

Eating a large amount of good quality fruits and veggies is paramount to a healthy diet and good quality sperm count. Only if these foods have large amounts of pesticides does it turn into a bad for fertility food!  If you are trying to conceive switching to organic or pesticide free fruit and veggies may be a good idea. Here is a list to some of the worst culprits for decreasing your sperm quality:

High Pesticide Food EXAMPLES:

Fruits high in Pesticides:

Blue Berries, Nectarines, Strawberries, Pears, Peaches, Apples, Grapes

Veggies High In Pesticides:

Peppers, Spinach, Celery, Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatoes, Potatoes, Kale, Collard Greens, Zucchini, Lettuce

This is not to say that you need to eat an 100% organic diet to have keep your fertility optimal. Eating the above examples from organic sources would be great but not all fruits and vegetables need to be organic. There are many crops which have minimal pesticides. You don't need to seek out organic for everything you eat.

Foods Low in Pesticides Examples:

Clean Veggies:

Onion, Avocado, Asparagus, Cabbage, Eggplant, Frozen Sweet Peas, Cauliflower, Sweet Potatoes, sweet corn

Clean Fruits:

Mango, Papayas, Pineapple, Kiwi, Grapefruit, Cantaloupe (domestic)
