I recently saw a woman age 39 carrying twins. She had conceived on a clomid cycle. She is very nervous about having to do an Amniocentesis. Is a Nuchal translucency screening test a safe alternative and appropriate for a woman carrying twins age 39?
What is the nuchal translucency screening test?
First trimester screening (FTS) is not a diagnostic test, which means it cannot tell you whether your baby has Down syndrome, trisomy 13, or trisomy 18. Instead, the screening provides a probability that the baby might have Down syndrome, trisomy 13, or trisomy 18. This probability, or chance, is based on three criteria: your age, information obtained on a sonogram (ultrasound), and bloodwork. The screening results can either alert you and your doctor that your baby is at an increased risk for one of these chromosome disorders or be reassuring that your baby is at a lower risk for these conditions.

First Trimester Screening (FTS) with Twins is very possible. The labs become less sensitive, and are generally not recommended. Therefore the Nuchal translucency and nasal bone are relied upon solely. The other benefits of FTS with twins, is the recognition of placentation, and some have talked about the early diagnosis of twin transfusion in monochorionic twins
