Hormone tests

Hi there. I was wondering what the doctors thought of saliva hormone testing. Is it accurate or are blood tests more accurate. Would a saliva test show if there is a luteal phase deficiency? Thanks for any information on this topic.

Hi Alice,
Good question - saliva testing is confusing.
I have to be honest that I am not a big fan of saliva testing as I feel that it is not accurate.
If you are wanting to predict when you are ovulating, a blood test is the best BUT it isn't really practical unless you are being followed by an infertility clinic. You end up having to do a few tests during the month and the results don't generally get back to you in time.
I personally like the urine LH kits (Ex clearplan) that measure a hormone in the urine to tell you when you are ovulating. It is reported to have accuracy over 90%. I have had some patients who don't find that the LH kits work for them and then they are back to blood tests through an infertility clinic.
Luteal phase defect is a real conundrum for us docs. We know that there are a group of women whose uterine lining degrade too quickly but it is really hard to diagnose this problem. We have tried even biopsies of the lining during the luteal phase and this hasn't worked. I don't have a lot of faith in saliva testing for this problem.
If you and your doctor suspect that you might have luteal phase defect, it is best to use some extra progesterone during the luteal phase to help support the lining.
I hope this helps,

Thanks for the quick reply! I have just one more question. Would the progesterone given after an ivf cycle be enough for someone with a luteal phase defect? Thanks again.
