Low DHEA level and infertility
Hello,
I have just been diagnosed by my doctor with a very level of DHEA - it is 71 - and the normal range is (apparently) from 100-2000. I don't really know what this means, although it seems that DHEA may some influence over my other hormone levels.
I have had 3 failed IVF attempts (2 fresh, one frozen) due to poor embryo quality, and am not sure whether it is one of the effects of the low DHEA. I have an identical twin sister who has had an early menopause and has osteopoena and she is now thinking of having her DHEA levels checked as it's possible that low DHEA was the cause. The good news is that my twin sister has just become pregnant through embryo donation at a clinic in Spain (she lives in the UK).
I am now waiting to see an endocrinologist in Calgary who can hopefully help, but wondered if you had come across this issue before in relation to infertility.
Thanks for your help.

I have little to add on this topic at this time.
There is some evidence that DHEA is beneficial for those who previously responded poorly to IVF and you actually have low levels of circulating DHEA. There is also inherent risk for taking DHEA if you do not have low levels of this hormone. I have a pod cast on acubalance on thsi topic. http://www.acubalance.ca/audio
Thanks Lorne - your podcast was really interesting. I will discuss with the endocrinologist and my naturopath, who is also an MD.
I appreciate your help.
Good luck Debs,
Leslie's talks more about hormone balance in her Blood sugar podcast.
I am pleased to hear the pod cast are informative. They are enjoyable for me to make. More to come in the coming months.

As a long time practitioner in the field, who has ALSO experienced
metabolic issues personally over the past 20 years, I have a lot of experience
(anecdotal/clinical) with this.Finding an anti - aging doctor or one who uses natural hormones is often
helpful.Discovering the role thyroid plays in all health is even more so, and
looking at www.stopthethyroid madness.com or what Dr Richard Shames and Karilee Shames have on their site
www.thyroidpower.com is a great
idea.
We the patient population need to learn that WE are the best ones to gauge
what we need - as we live in the body and know how it is/not working well. The thyroid hormones that allow us to live well (as YANG QI /KIDNEY YANG/JING
in acupuncture terms) are made from DHEA.As are the reproductive ones.Hence for MEN also - low DHEA is a problem. When what is the foundation of life - the adrenal (KIDNEY YANG again ) is
boosted - then we are all strengthened and work at our potential. There is a family of herbal products/supplements called adaptogens - which
work more generally than just supplying DHEA or any other and sometimes
along with vast changes in expectations of self - and burning the candle at
both ends - and listening to/following good HEALTH advice - things can improve.Sometimes it takes too long - and hence the supplementation issue- at least
till you can take over making your own.
Unfortunately as there is no carrot for research (can't patent a naturally occurring
substance) at this stage. it would seem there are warnings out about taking it
in pregnancy.
If we are not making our own and then start making another person (pregnancy)
the drain on self is large and external any help is beneficial - the issue becomes - how
can I support myself AND baby/ies (last woman I corrected this with had two embryos
and now has very healthy triplets). What form of help?Great alternative hormonal investigation - as the thyroid markers are very widespread and most men and women who come to see me have major and undiagnosed thyroid/adreanal burnout problems which are made far worse through trying to get pregnant BEFORE getting well.
Sex follows babies when we are.
I continually find in clinic that if desperate to be pregnant people get the point that they want WELL babies and vibrant mum to mother them - they all need a health overhaul - as the body bits that are 'not working' have a reason to be on holiday and getting the 'garden' ready means the harvest is far more bountiful.
For the guys (who are usually the 'culprit' in my experience - and SHE can only do half the job of baby making herself) it means that if their own BBT (oral/first thing in the morning is NOT 98F/36.6/8C) then there is major work to do - and the gym and trimming the gut and gettng a great digestive system lead the way here. Takes time, but the crop of well babies is the prize.
