Confused

Hi there -

I started seeing a ND (with a background in Chinese Medicine) in March '10, following a miscarriage. I've been doing her treatment plan, but also doing my own research online. I'm very confused about what she's telling me and what I've found online.

My plan is:
2 Flax Oil capsules & 2 tbsp. ground flax seed - Days 1-14
2 Evening Primrose capsules (GLA) & 2 tbsp. ground sunflower seeds - Days 15-menses
Wild Yam cream - 1/4 tsp every day

I have only been using the Wild Yam cream on days 12-27, as my family doctor told me not to use it every day. All the research I've done on my own says DO NOT use EPO in the 2nd half of your cycle, and do NOT use too much flax.

I did have 4 acupuncture sessions (Feb-Apr), but my ND told me it's not worth it right now, as my body doesn't have the 'juice to move around'.

I'm really not sure what to do anymore, and if I'm helping or hindering my chances to conceive! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Background info: Pregnant in December '09 after TTC 2 months, age 30, DH age 35. Missed miscarriage discovered at 7 weeks. Misoprostol did not work. D&C end of Jan.  Light bleeding for next 5 weeks. Expulsion of tissue products Mar. 2. U/S confirmed remaining products Mar. 4. U/S clear on Mar. 17. Period returned Mar. 15. Currently on 4th cycle since miscarriage.

Confusion or lack of confidence

Hi,
From your post it is my observation that you may lack confidence in your practitioner which is leading to confusion.  You may want to bring up these questions directly with him or her.  As practitioners we often forget what we know so well maybe not so obvious to you.  The web is full of partial information so please discuss with your ND these concerns.  Also, if you want to see someone who has experience in treating reproductive issues check out http://www.aborm.org/ABORM_certified_practitioners.html and/or http://www.thefertilesoulcefp.org/memberListing for someone in your area.

I personally do use EPO in my fertility treatments so I do not have much to offer on it.  I prefer fish oil over flax since the EPA and DHA needs to be converted from the flax which is readily available in fish form.  Just make sure you find a very good source as quality is key.

For wild yam cream to be effective it is my understanding it needs to be converted in a lab to progesterone.  This is more the ND area and not Chinese medicine but from the ND's I know if it has not been converted then very little therapeutic value.  ND's cannot sell the therapeutic kind legally in Canada at the time of this post. So......?

The explanation of not enough energy to move around with acupuncture does not make sense to me.  You adjust point selection, combination, stimulation and length of retention based on the individual patient on your table at the time.  Again please feel free to look at the list of experienced practitioner’s links I posted above.
I am sorry to hear about your pregnancy loss and the long path to have your cycle return.   If you need a second opinion please contact Melissa [at] acubalance [dot] ca  to set a time.  But I suggest you use the links above to find someone in your area. You can also search our site on topics regarding miscarriage and other areas related to fertility.  I hope it will be helpful.
