Exercise turns back your reproductive clock
Hi everyone, Dr. Erikson here. If you get the chance I highly recommend reading this article I recently stumbled across titled "The true secret of youth? Exercise", by Sharon Kirkey of the Ottawa Citizen newspaper. Writing about research that Canadian scientists published, Sharon totally inspired and reminded me of just how powerful regular exercise can be on our overall health. In fact she showed how exercise offered an anti-aging effect to practically every tissue of the body - including the sex organs (the testicles and ovaries).
Meaning that exercise may help turn back our reproductive clock!
In the article, Tarnopolsky, a professor of pediatrics and medicine at Mc- Master's Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, is quoted as saying, "I think that exercise is the most potent anti-aging therapy available today and likely forever." Wow, I thought, this is such a powerful statement. There is no mystic about the so-called "fountain of youth" anymore! Exercise is it. And the great thing is that exercise is totally free, we just have to do it.
Sharon commented that "Canadian scientists appear to have proven that you can, in fact, run away from old age." We could twist this and say, "we may, in fact, be able to run away from infertility!"
Living a healthy life, which included regular exercise and acupuncture, was certainly the reason for many of my patients successful pregnancy outcome. This was particularly true for "J", a past client of mine who achieved a natural pregnancy on our her own at age 42, even though other fertility experts had told her she would need donor eggs or even adoption. For J, exercise was a very important part of her daily routines.
So may we all remember that the fountain of youth lies within our own reach. Actually, it is just as far as those old dusty running shoes sitting in the closet. I encourage all of you to keep an active lifestyle, make it fun, and make it last for your whole life through.
All the best,
Dr. Trevor Erikson
