Low Sperm Count Linked to Obesity
Again, the old adage prevails; 'what is bad for your heart is bad for your penis!'. Researchers at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Scotland have said "There is a very long list of health hazards from being overweight, now we can add poor semen quality to the list.". Because fat tissue influences the metabolism of sex hormones, scientists think it might also disrupt sperm production. It could also be a temperature problem. Sperm is best produced at a
temperature slightly cooler than normal body temperature. But because
obese men have more fat, they may be overheated. Quite clearly, male fitness and health are linked to a man's fertility. Interestingly, underweight men also show the same issue, low sperm counts.
Obesity is already well known to reduce fertility in women, as well as increase miscarriage rates.
