41 - Low Sperm Count and Morphology
Overview:
Male – Age 41, Social worker. Fertility Analysis (as of May 2004): low concentration – 10.7 million, very low normal forms (morphology) – 1%, very low after wash total motile count – 6.1 million, small testes. Recommended ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).
Exercise: weekly soccer, hockey, weight training, skiing, running, cycling, yoga, hiking.
Signs & Symptoms:
- low back soreness and a sore right knee.
- rare migraines.
- strange painful sensation underneath his rib cage on the right hand side, this was checked to see if there was any issues with the liver or gall bladder and all tests came up negative.
- some sinus congestion.
- bowels alternate from loose to hard.
- wakes early and has trouble getting back to sleep.
- occasional night sweats.
His job was not making him happy so he was putting heavy thought into leaving
1st course of Treatment: Liver detox, supplements, diet changes, revision of some lifestyle habits, Chinese herbal medicine, and Acupuncture two times per week until mid October.
2nd course of Treatment: The same treatment was given until mid November with the exception of the reduction of Acupuncture treatments to once per week.
A break from Acupuncture and Chinese herbs was taken until the following January. It had been decided to attempt IVF and the semen sample was to be given in approx. 12 days. Two acupuncture treatments were given within this time along with a weeks worth of Chinese herbs. Great concern for his wife was displayed.
Results: Fertility Analysis (as of October 2004): low concentration – 10.7 million (no change), significant increase in normal forms (morphology) – 5%, significant increase in after wash total motile count – 26.9 million. Recommended IVF.
One ICSI and one IVF fertilized embryo each were taken to the blastocyst stage of growth and transferred. The hard work put into reproductive health paid off when a positive pregnancy test result came back. 40 weeks later they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl!
