The buzz around Coenzyme Q10 and egg quality

Lately I have been asked a lot about the benefits of CoQ10 and why there seems to be a big influx of talk around women over 40 taking the supplement to improve egg quality.
As mentioned in an earlier blog, Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is safe to take and may improve the availability of mitochondrial energy production for the maturing oocyte and developing embryo, thereby reducing the rate of chromosomal nondisjunction and improving implantation in older infertile patients.

Mid-September during a Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) meeting, Dr. Robert Casper presented a very promising paper noting an improvement in egg quality in older mice. This paper has created quite a buzz of optimism and several of the local IVF clinics have decided to see if they can reproduce the results in their patients. In a recent blog, Dr. Beth Taylor discusses the use of CoQ10 for her patients at Genesis Fertility Centre.
