Bicornate uterus
Hi there! I'm 36 and we've been trying to conceive for nine months. My doctor told me to come back if I haven't conceived in a year...and
I'm trying to be patient but it gets tough sometimes (patience is often
the hardest thing!)I have had a fertility work up and everything looks good other than the fact that I have a bicornate uterus which they discovered during my HSG and shouldn't impact my ability to conceive although it can increase risk of miscarriage/ability to carry to term. There isn't a lot of information out there and I'm wondering about endometriosis and whether I should get a laproscopy to "fix" the uterus as well. My uterus is just another thing I'm worrying about and I'm working hard to reduce the stress as it is. Any suggestions/information on this topic? Thank you so much!

Hello CAJ,
A bicornuate uterus cannot be diagnosed with a HSG alone. A bicorunate uterus can look like a septate uterus on HSG. MRI and/or ultrasound can help tell the difference between a bicornuate and septate uterus but to definitively know, a laparoscopy is required. If at the time of the laparoscopy if I discover that it is a septate uterus I remove the the septum then and there. The septum is removed not by laparoscopy but by hysteroscopy - going up throught the vagina and cervix into the uterus and removing the septum. The whole process takes about 1-1.5 hours and is covered by the provincial health program (MSP).
If you want more information on laparoscopy and hysteroscopy you can read my handouts at this link:

I hope this helps!
