Best diet for losing weight and keeping it off
Researchers at the Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE), University of Copenhagen, revealed the results of the world's largest diet study in a recent publication of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The study showed that if you want to lose weight, you should follow a diet moderately high in protein, including lean meat, beans and legumes, and low in refined carbohydrate calories such as white bread and white rice. This diet also helps you maintain weight loss-- you can eat until you are full without counting calories or gaining weight!
I wasn't surprised to read about these results as the low glycemic diet described in this study is very similar to the Acubalance Fertile Diet we prescribe to our clients who are trying to conceive. An often reported "side effect" of our diet is that many women find they lose weight without even trying!
One important difference to note between the Acubalance Diet and the University of Copenhagen study is that the Acubalance Diet emphasizes vegetable sources of protein (like beans and legume) over animal protein. Don't get me wrong it's not a vegetarian diet. We do recommend moderate amount of high quality protein like deep water fish or or organic grass fed beef, but a recent study shows that a plant based diet that limits animal protein significantly improves your chances of getting pregnant.
Our diet is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine dietary guidelines as well as data from a landmark study published in 2008, based on the Harvard Nurses Study, which makes startling connections between diet and conception.
This study, which contains the most comprehensive research to date on diet and fertility, associates a slow carb, whole food, mostly plant based diet with a six-fold increase in fertility. Specifically, the study found that women who had the lowest risk of ovulation problem-related infertility (or the highest fertility) ate a plant based, low GI, whole foods diet, focusing more on vegetable protein and monounsaturated fats. In addition women with the highest fertility exercised more, took a multivitamin mineral supplement and ate at least one serving of high fat dairy each day.
